“Art and expression through visual media is one of my passions in and outside the lab. We as researchers, already rely heavily on schematics and figures to communicate our research to each other. I am seeking every opportunity to harness that same power that visual media has to communicate ideas directly from researchers to a broader audience.”
Research Focus
The Roh-Johnson Lab studies how cancer cells hijack mechanisms that normally drive cell movement during development. Using zebrafish and mouse models alongside cell culture systems, the lab traces how migrating cells communicate with their surroundings and interpret those signals to move.
A particular focus is cell-contact-dependent cytoplasmic transfer, a process by which cells exchange material directly, and how the tumor microenvironment shapes that communication in cancers including breast cancer and melanoma.

“I do science because I love learning. I have always been curious about how things work and enjoy digging deeper into questions that do not yet have answers. Every experiment is an opportunity to discover something new, and that sense of exploration is what keeps me excited about research.”
Research Focus
The Hilgendorf Lab studies adipose (fat) tissue, specifically how fat cells communicate with each other and the rest of the body, and how different signals determine when and how new fat cells form. Fat tissue expands in one of two ways: by making more fat cells, or by storing more energy in the fat cells it already has. That balance matters for metabolic health, since larger fat cells are linked to disease like diabetes, while smaller fat cells (even in greater number) tend to be metabolically healthier. The lab’s goal is to identify the signals that steer this balance, with an eye toward combating obesity and its related diseases.
The lab also studies the relationship between fat tissue and cancer. Obesity is a known risk factor for 13 types of cancer, including post-menopausal breast cancer, and the team is working to identify the signals exchanged between breast cancer cells and the fat tissue that surrounds them, work that could reveal how fat tissue helps drive, or fight, tumor growth.

Talaina (she/her) is Pacific Northwest born and raised with a deep connection to the Central Oregon Coast. With a background in communications & sociology, she joined CPC as a board member in 2024 before becoming its first director.

Jamie (she/they) is a Yachatian local and two-decade veteran of marine education, from the Oregon Coast Aquarium to Disney World’s The Seas. She leads tidepool tours and is a photographer with Girl In Water Photography.
