Alex is part of the IDEALs Lab at North Carolina State University, working alongside Dr. Daniella Jones, Annelise Intemann, and Michael Kudenov.
Research Focus
In the IDEALs Lab, we aim to empower North Carolina’s growers with the tools they need to thrive. Our lab develops reliable, effective solutions that boost productivity, sustainability, and efficiency across the state’s diverse agricultural landscape. From precision technology to data-driven insights, we work hand-in-hand with farmers to tackle real-world challenges, helping them grow more with less, protect natural resources, and build resilient operations for generations to come.

Meet the Scientist
MS Student · North Carolina State University
Eliza is an MS student at North Carolina State University, working with Dr. Lara Pacifici and Dr. Caren Cooper on the participatory science project Sound Around Town.
Research Focus
Sound connects us all; both humans and wildlife. We all use sound to communicate where we are, what we need, and how we feel using sound. As the seasons change in North Carolina, the soundscape created by humans, birds, amphibians, and insects ebbs and flows.
How does noise from increasing urbanization affect us and the wildlife around us? Birds may have to sing earlier or change their songs to compete with the noise of rush hour traffic while humans suffer increased stress when exposed to the prolonged noise of our daily lives in urban areas. By pairing outdoor education with the participatory science project Sound Around Town, we can observe our environment throughout the seasons, measure the sounds we’re hearing, and evaluate how they make us feel. Through programs that engage all ages with wildlife and the sounds of nature, we can support our overall wellbeing by easing stress and enhancing positive feelings.

PhD Student · Roh-Johnson Lab · University of Utah, Dept. of Biochemistry
“Art and expression through visual media is one of my passions in and outside the lab. We as researchers, already rely heavily on schematics and figures to communicate our research to each other. I am seeking every opportunity to harness that same power that visual media has to communicate ideas directly from researchers to a broader audience.”
Research Focus
The Roh-Johnson Lab studies how cancer cells hijack mechanisms that normally drive cell movement during development. Using zebrafish and mouse models alongside cell culture systems, the lab traces how migrating cells communicate with their surroundings and interpret those signals to move.
A particular focus is cell-contact-dependent cytoplasmic transfer, a process by which cells exchange material directly, and how the tumor microenvironment shapes that communication in cancers including breast cancer and melanoma.

Hilgendorf Lab · University of Utah, Dept. of Biochemistry
“I do science because I love learning. I have always been curious about how things work and enjoy digging deeper into questions that do not yet have answers. Every experiment is an opportunity to discover something new, and that sense of exploration is what keeps me excited about research.”
Research Focus
The Hilgendorf Lab studies adipose (fat) tissue, specifically how fat cells communicate with each other and the rest of the body, and how different signals determine when and how new fat cells form. Fat tissue expands in one of two ways: by making more fat cells, or by storing more energy in the fat cells it already has. That balance matters for metabolic health, since larger fat cells are linked to disease like diabetes, while smaller fat cells (even in greater number) tend to be metabolically healthier. The lab’s goal is to identify the signals that steer this balance, with an eye toward combating obesity and its related diseases.
The lab also studies the relationship between fat tissue and cancer. Obesity is a known risk factor for 13 types of cancer, including post-menopausal breast cancer, and the team is working to identify the signals exchanged between breast cancer cells and the fat tissue that surrounds them, work that could reveal how fat tissue helps drive, or fight, tumor growth.

Talaina (she/her) is Pacific Northwest born and raised with a deep connection to the Central Oregon Coast. With a background in communications & sociology, she joined CPC as a board member in 2024 before becoming its first director.
Program Associate & Tidepool Ambassador, CPC
Jamie (she/they) is a Yachatian local and two-decade veteran of marine education, from the Oregon Coast Aquarium to Disney World’s The Seas. She leads tidepool tours and is a photographer with Girl In Water Photography.
